Simply because you are visiting this site I know for sure that you are looking to get links to your website. I don’t know if you’ve been around the Internet as long as I have, so I’ll give you a little background information. I was actually using the Internet before there was a World Wide Web and everything was text based. In those days there were no links and no websites as we know them today.

The World Wide Web came into existence  in 1990 and thus was created the quest to get website links. However, for about six years, there was only one motivation to get links to your website. That motivation was to get direct traffic to your site. In 1996 Google appeared on the scene and added a new reason to get links to your site. Google started using link popularity as a primary way to determine which sites were the best for any particular keyword.

Today Google accounts for almost 80% of all Web searches and Web search is the primary way people find websites. That fact makes getting a high ranking in Google the most important factor in having a successful website. That leads us to the point of this article. If you want to succeed on the Net you need to know how to get links to your website.

The old fashioned way to get links is to exchange links with other webmasters. Link exchanges can be manual or using automated systems. Unfortunately, two way links don’t have he power they once did for increasing your rankings. They may get you a little direct traffic, and they are worth doing if you can do it without spending a lot of time on it. However, one way links carry much more weight in getting your site ranked in the search engines, especially Google.

So how do you get these coveted one way links? You can buy them, but there are many drawbacks to buying links which I will go into in more depth in another article. For now, I’m just going to post a list of other ways to get one way links and I’ll give you more details on how to use the methods in future posts. Here is my “short list” of ways to get one way links:

  • Blog Commenting
  • Forum Posting
  • Directory Submission
  • RSS Feed Directories
  • Social Bookmarking
  • Article Marketing
  • Classified Ads
  • Press Releases
  • Link Baiting
  • Guest Blogging
  • FFA Sites (not recommended)
  • Posting on Advertising Blogs
  • Creating Free Blogs (lots of these sites will be detailed later)
  • Building Your Own Hosted Blog Network
  • Your Circle of Online Friends
  • Sneaky Backdoor Listings (mainly free service registrations that get your links on authority sites)
  • Subscribing to One Way Link Services

The list is not in any particular order. I’m sure I will be adding to the above list, but that gives you a good start. As mentioned earlier, look for details on all these methods soon. If you have ways to get links to your website in mind that I missed that you would like covered please post a comment and let me know.

I’m over 50 and still learning.

    Thanks Jaroslav

  • I am what you would consider a “newbie” I have written blogs on 3 different services. My traffic is non existant so far.My latest traffic strategy was to write to friends and have them leave comments.Unfortunately I don’t have enough friends to make this worthwhile, although it is nice to have something you took the time and care to write to be read. I am 52 year of age, and recently laid off from a profession I spent 23 years in.Ironically it was the printing and publishing trade. So thank you for the advice, I only hope I can put it to good use.
    Sincerely: Skip

If you have good original content and learn how to build keyword anchored links to it you will get traffic. It’s a pretty simple formula once you get the hang of it.

  • Lee,

Thank you so, much for such wonderful information. I am just beginning to learn about blogging and keywords, links and SEO. It is truly amazing what you have shared it is hard for me at this time to put into words except, simply “awsome”. I will enjoy applying what you have shared. I know now I will get my blog together so that it may serve its purpose of helping others.

    Thank you, once again.

  • An interesting way I read about for getting or creating lots of back links is to create data feed web sites on a blogging platform. Sometimes these data feed sites generate hundreds, even thousands of pages of product information feeds.

After building the data feed site, use the sites blog roll to add your money site url.

This can create a lot of links to your money site.

    Hi Lee,

Your site was recommended to me in mid-November, but I didn’t get around to actually exploring all you offer until this past weekend. You have just what I’m looking for. I’m heavily into WordPress and it’s SEO features, and really believe that your great free services will help take my business to the next level.

I signed up for your Newsletter and used Ping-4-Free yesterday as well. It’s just awesome. I received a response e-mail from you, and I greatly appreciate you philosophy of non-intrusive relationship marketing (my terms). You call it “will not try to slam you with sales pitches in my e-mails,” or something similar.

You provide great “VALUE”, and I look forward to hearing more from you!

    Best Regards,

    Rick Samara

Get article and good insight for anyone wanting to learn more on how to get traffic to their site.

  • HmI’ve never thought the evidently simple ways a search engine like Google works. The affair is that even though a spider “indexes” your page countless times, it takes a ton of work on your part in order to get a site to become “relevent” to Google. I guess this lends to my understanding of search engine optimization.

  • That’s a very interesting blog that you have. I came across a new one the other day. They look open for business, but very similar to linkedin.com with more of a social business directory look and feel. Nice easy interface though. It’s at SocialTerrain.com
