Steve – you make some very good points. I think there is a skew for popular keywords on all of the keyword tools from people searching for their own site to see if it ranks. That is one reason to go for lots of “long tail” meaning three or more word phrases instead of banking on one or two big money keywords.

In my optimization efforts I try to take a “Google Proven” approach. For example, using a ~ search to establish the terms Google actually recognizes as synonyms.

“Google’s numbers are from their own search data and are probably more accurate.” My concern has always been the number of automated searches that are done on the “money terms” by search engine optimizers. WordTracker claims to adjust for this.

Personally, with respect to WordTracker, I’ve always questioned the relevance of meta-search engine results (such as from DogPile.com) to my target market. I suspect that not 1 in 2000 of my prospects would even know what a meta-search engine is.
